5 tips for a smoother visa application

Most visa application delays come down to a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here's what consistently makes the biggest difference.

1. Check eligibility before you do anything else

It sounds obvious, but it's worth saying: confirm your nationality is eligible for the specific visa type before filling in any details. It takes under a minute and saves you from filling out a full application only to find out it doesn't apply to you.

2. Match your name exactly to your passport

Enter your name precisely as it appears on your passport's photo page — not a nickname, not a shortened version, not a different name order. Small mismatches between your application and your passport are one of the most common causes of processing delays.

3. Double-check your passport's expiry date

Before applying, confirm your passport has enough validity remaining for your trip. This is one of the few things that can't be corrected after submission — if your passport is too close to expiring, you'll need a new passport before reapplying.

4. Take document photos in good, even light

Natural daylight near a window is usually your best bet. Avoid direct flash (which causes glare on glossy passport pages) and dim indoor lighting (which makes text hard to read). Lay the document flat and make sure all four corners are visible in the frame.

5. Review everything before you pay

Once an application is submitted, it can't be refunded — so it's worth taking the extra minute on the Review step to check every detail: dates, spelling, passport number, and each uploaded document. Every step in our application wizard can be edited right up until you submit.
